Can't mix with 2 decks? Try three!

Okay, so the title of this blog is a little harsh.  I've heard Crisis pull off some blindingly good mixes.  But the fact remains for the most part his mixes were deeply unsophisticated.  An off-time train-wreck, if you will.  How this prompted him to become a master of three decks intrigues me.

But it was always about the tracks with Crisis.  Solid sets of hardcore were his trademark, never heading overboard into nosebleed territory and never settling for crowd-pleasing cheese-fests either.  Respect to the man for that.

This mix comes off CD, picked up around 2004 or 2005 from Cash Converters of all places.  A $7.00 win amongst a whole rack of Hanson's first album.  I'd never heard this album before then (I'm back on Crisis now), but the artwork suggests it's a companion title to the much-loved "Crisis Sunday 3AM".  And it's of a similar quality to that mix, if a little harder.

  1. Hey Man - Yeh Crisis put out some mad mixes - at that time (july 94) we released "Tri-Mix - A Journey Thru HarTcore Techno", "Mental 666 - Techno Extreme" & "Crisis Sunday Crisis" as CD's. all previous were tapes as you know - many tapes were never put out but mass copied. future tapes like Megablast and Technology put out in 97 etc - were already on dat from the year previous but mental mixing like this needed to be in the ears of the raving public.. anyways, i have all demo mixes from 1991-1998 - recall "AURAL EXCITER 3x3x3 " ...one of the best hardcore tapes in 1994!

as for mad trax - "Mental Blur", "3-Decks", (late 1993) and "3-Decks 2", "Infinate Creative Alliance", (early 1994) - INSANE !!!

Someone posted the entire Crisis back catalogue over at the Oldskool group on Facebook. (The person in the first comment, perhaps?)

There's loads there, but I don't think they're in any particular order.

  4. Dj Crisis was a dude trying to make hardcore real.. his raves were incredible. even though his mixes where quite raw, living the scene in that era, I will not hear a bad bone of crisis. I saw him do Fantazia '92/93 NYE, and crisis point raves. old school hardcore was raw... I just want to know - where is he now???

  5. The download link doesn't work anymore? zshare problems? Cash converters is where you can find some really cool 'used' music for a cheap price. actually I found some excellent stuff back n those old days. Now even Cash converters don't exist no more...

  8. RE where is he now???

Picked up a copy of The Big Issue (No 367) last November - there's a missing persons notice at the back of the mag. Unfortunately Crisis (real name Chris Paul Caldersmith) was one of three people featured as missing. Last known contact was back in 2006.

Anyone with info should contact the Salvation Army Tracing Service

  13. ^ Someone sounds jaded and jelous. Crisis played some banging mental sets at some huge Syd parties. Some of his sets at Tribals and Crisis Points were unreal. Sometimes he got a bit messy, but when he was on point he had the place going off big time. Never forget the time at DJ SHADES Rave Back In Time on the rooftop when CRISIS had the place going NUTS and the floor was moving up and down and people were loving it so much, then the power cut out, as it got overloaded or something, Came back on not too long after and the crowd cheered and got right back into the music. CRISIS always seemed to be way ahead in getting new, advanced techno before most the other syd dj's.

Another tape i recall of his was MASTER BLASTER.

  17. 92 93 94 crisis led the best marching rave music at the time yer he wasn't always spot on in the cross fades or beat mixes.but he always created an atmosphere that was nobody else could.at the time out of all the crisp and clean djs of the time I would pick a crisis mix everytime.Crisis point St leanards carpark was killa and another time inside a freight container with mikal holding the speakers back so they wouldn't fall was just reverberating doofdoofdoofdoofwooofwooofwooof. All the crisis point parties. it was a MAGIC era crisis smashing 3 decks with a passion.Ihave fond memories of chris and roy (rip) comin to my house n asking if I would sell some crisis point tshirts b4 a party but I got to smashed and forgot to take them to the rave and all he said was fuck it it's good.so we all went in and fukn marched on until the morning.I loved the circle of friends I had from that era it Neva felt like it was goin to end.anyway soldier on as they say.my mind is a little mashed now but fuck it I wouldn't change a thing.92 93 94 were the best years for the rave scene.crisis was a pioneer of the time.if u r goin to try to critique him for not having the Cleanest mixes then u missed the whole fukn point.it was about the killamusic and atmosphere he brought to every mix thats what matters. He was a fukn legend of the time.anyway I'm goin to enquire about were he is now that he has been brought up and it's a good excuse to speak to some old mates to . HARTCORE HARTCORE HARTCORE ....

  19. I knew chris personally - he was highly intelligent, had imense wisdom and was a true artist. Yes he was near impossible to argue with - eventually I learned not to do this as it was counter productive, and often afterwards I would find out he was right anyways. I think his straight up no bullshit approach is what got so many people's back up... but when that energy was translated through vinyl and speakers it really got the party going.. like no one else in the scene at the time. I truely miss him as a friend. Someone who would help me with my production, listen carefully and provide insightful feedback for my mixes, and lend or even give me audio equipment when ever I needed it. As with all great artists some scum bags came into his life and took advantage of his generous nature. I have not seen him since about 2006, and was greatly dissapointed when he was billed for the re-union party at the metro but never turned up. This may be beacuse an unscrupulous promoter was cashing in on his name, or it could have just be chris being chris - we will never know. Chris mate, if your out there drop your forry boys (JB & SS) a line.

Anyone doubting that he was better than carl cox needs to get a history lesson - I was there at the table when Carl himself told chris he preferred his 3 decks style to his own.

  20. I would have probably crossed paths with you at some stage. I was good friends with chris and would be up there rocking the party with him. He played some amazing sets back to basics lve nation in search of kaha just to name a few. Was always a goos party when geoff and chris were after each other....
